Laterite quarries on govt land in Bicholim fenced: Mamlatdar

BICHOLIM: Based on the directives of the Collector, the Bicholim Mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit has informed that all laterite stone quarries situated on the government land in the taluka have been fenced.
It may be recalled that following the recent incident at Pernem, the government machinery was forced to inspect the stone quarries in the State. The Collector had also directed the concerned authorities to carry out inspection and take precautionary measures.
In view of this, the Pandit through a letter dated October 17, has informed the Collector that all the precautionary measures have been already taken.
Pandit had instructed the PWD to undertake the installation of barbed wires around the quarries and also to erect sign boards stating ‘Diving/swimming in the said quarries is prohibited’. It was also directed to put a warning that the general public are not allowed to enter the site as it is government property and trespassers would be prosecuted.
Following the directives, the mamlatdar conducted a site inspection and a letter to the Collector was thus forwarded. The police have been directed to depute their personnel in the area to prohibit any extraction of laterite stones from the site.
