MARGAO: The controversial housing project at Utorda dominated the gram sabha of the village Panchayat of Majorda-Utorda-Calata on Sunday.
Sarpanch Moises Vaz had to face a barrage of questions on the controversial project and the Panchayat action on the matter till date. Members cried foul over the indifferent attitude of the Panchayat body in representing the Panchayat in the appeal filed by the builder in the court of Additional Director of Panchayats. After much discussion, the Sarpanch accepted the demand raised by the members for replacing the lawyer representing the Panchayat in this particular case.
Members questioned the Sarpanch for returning the file back to the builder when the construction project ought to have been rejected by the Panchayat body. They took strong exception to the Panchayat decision of returning the file when asserting that the file should have been rejected by the body.
Local MLA Mickky Pacheco, who attended the meeting, said he is fully with the villagers agitating against the project.
Mickky later told newsmen that it is the Town and Country Planning department which approves construction files before they are sent to the Panchayat body for approval.
The housing Project at Utorda had figured prominently at the last gram sabha held on January 27, wherein the members had demanded rejection of the construction file on grounds that the project would hit the village infrastructure, including water, electricity, garbage road, drainage system, water logging etc.
