PONDA: Around 6.30 pm, the sound of a blast on the fifth floor created panic among the residents of Almeida Complex here. The maid of the flat rushed out to alert other residents and the plumber working in the floor. She sought their help to rescue a 75-year-old person who was caught in the thick smoke as the LCD TV in the room caught fire and burst into flames.
Residents of other flats rushed in to save the aged person. The flat is owned by one Sanjay Dalvi, who hails from Palim. His father was watching TV when the incident took place.
The senior citizen was hospitalised. The bed in the room also caught fire due to the blast. Fire-fighters reached the spot soon after had a hard time to contain the blaze. The room was in a bad shape after the fire incident.
