Legislators, MMC chief inspect Sonsoddo dump

MARGAO: Fatorda independent MLA Vijai Sardesai and Curtorim Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, along with MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva held a joint inspection of the Sonsodo garbage dump and the treatment plant after a non-governmental organization ‘Goa with Love’ demanded an inspection and immediate redressal of the problems faced by the local people.

Local councillor and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Fomento Green Shridhar Kamat were also at the site.
Like every year, the capping of the garbage dump has been pushed one month ahead due to inaction by MMC to tender the procurement of tarpaulin and get the dump covered. The residents of Fatorda and part of Curtorim have to face the effects of the leachate flowing out of the dump and the smell of rotting garbage. The flowing dirt has already polluted the wells and ground water till Madel and Comba.
The MLAs and other stake holders have for now decided to concentrate on capping the dump as soon as possible and have asked the contractor to get the tarpaulin as soon as possible.
“What we need is to put public pressure and assembly pressure. Public pressure is to get the works on ground done as soon as possible. As for assembly pressure, I will demand a full one-hour discussion on the Sonsodo problem and seek a permanent solution to the problem,” Sardessai said.
“I have asked for a meeting with the chief minister as I am the member of the High Powered Committee. The aim is to solve the problem before a public interest litigation is filed and the issue gets complicated. The people cannot be allowed to suffer from this health hazard any longer,” Lourenco said.
“The area of the dump has already been handed over to the MMC and Fomento now has little to do to cure this problem of dump,” added Kamat, Fomento Gree CEO.
The NGO and the leaders have decided to mount public pressure if the capping and a permanent solution to the problem is not reached soon.
