MARGAO: A Leopard, believed to be a sub adult, was found dead in the village of Dramapur on Monday morning.
The veterinary department conducted the post mortem examination around noon to ascertain the exact cause of death and the report is expected by Tuesday morning.
The incident came to light in the morning when a local resident Joaquim Da Costa as usual had gone out to feed the pigs when he spotted the Leopard in the locality. Joaquim returned home and informed his son and they headed to the spot, only to find the leopard dead. “Initially, I thought that the leopard was on the prowl in the locality, but realisation dawned that it was lying dead”, Joaquim said.
Range Forest Officer, mobile squad, Pranay Naik, said there were no visible injuries on the body of the sub adult leopard, but hastened to add that blood was oozing out from the animal’s nose. “Either the leopard has died of a snake bite or it hit its nose in the dead of the night”, Naik added.
Dramapur village falls within the Paroda forest range which has been the home of leopards. Incidentally, a leopard was trapped by the Forest Department in Dramapur village some time back following complaints from the local residents.
