Life convict commits suicide
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
CALANGUTE, APRIL 1
A 30-year-old prisoner recently sentenced to life imprisonment committed suicide in the Central Jail at Sinquerim in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
According to Calangute police, Anand Kambli ended his life by hanging himself to a toilet grill with the help of a bandage.
Kambli was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a British woman and had been shifted to the Central Jail on March 23.
Calangute police was alerted of the incident at about 5.45 am and immediately sent for a 108 ambulance. The prisoner was, however, dead by the time the emergency services reached the site.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dasharath Redkar investigated the incident.
Incidentally, this is the second death to have taken place in a jail in the State within less than 10 days.
On March 23 – the same day when Kambli was shifted to the Central jail – British fugitive of Indian origin, Ajay Kaushal, who
was wanted by the UK police in an abduction case, died after complaining of uneasiness at the Sada Sub-jail in Vasco.
Sada jail authorities have registered a case of custodial death and an inquiry has been commissioned in the matter.
