PANJIM: The Drishti lifeguards continued their indefinite strike for the third day, changing it to a ‘satyagraha movement’ as they shifted their venue to the Tourism Department at Patto, Panjim on Thursday.
Goa Trade and Commercial Workers’ Union (GTCWU) president Christopher Fonseca said, “We stand firm on all our demands and await the government to solve the issue as soon as possible.”
Along with other demands, the lifeguards focused on a roadmap of service conditions. They stated that the training should be handed over to an independent body, and should include basic medical services.
Fonseca demanded that the government take full responsibility and regularize the jobs of the lifeguards. “The lifeguards should have alternative employment after retirement so that they can be rehabilitated. They are not match sticks to be used and thrown,” he said.
He said that Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has promised to meet them on Friday and hoped for an immediate solution.
