VASCO: Structures that violate norms on the minimum distance from live wires and transmission systems is a serious issue, but it gets attention only after there is a casualty.
The problem is partly attributed to the lack of concern from the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and electricity department.
In fact, both authorities have not yet taken the preliminary step of identifying structures with live wires running close by, thereby posing a threat to the residents.
There should be a four-metre vertical clearance and a two-meter horizontal clearance between a conductor and any part of a building. However, several structures in New Vaddem, Baina and other places in Vasco are violating the rule.
It is surprising that the high voltage wires crisscrossing over residential areas and shops have not been taken seriously. For this reason, some people have started to shift the live wires on their own. Some use wooden sticks to raise the height of the conductors; others pull the wires away from their houses, while the electricity department continues to turn a blind eye.
