BELGAUM: The wholesale vegetable market at Belgaum stopped loading of vegetables for Goa, even as Goa’s horticulture corporation lifted its quota of vegetable supplies from the market yard on Tuesday.
The wholesale vegetable suppliers also had their shops shut down on Tuesday and not a single vehicle carrying vegetables was loaded from Belgaum and Khanapur.
“About 100 tempos carrying vegetables, onions and potatoes are sent by wholesale suppliers from Belgaum to Goa. We have not loaded even a single vehicle to Goa today,” stated P Y Kadam, president of wholesale vegetable suppliers to Goa.
Also responding to the strike by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) against Goa’s entry tax, transporters from Belgaum and Khanapur stopped the supply of goods and commodities like cement, limestone, dolomite and scrap to Goa.
“About 300 tonnes of cement, 1,000 tonnes of limestone and dolomite and 30 vehicles transporting scrap go to Goa daily. However since Sunday midnight, we have suspended the transportation of these goods,” stated Sameer Shigli, a fleet owner carrying cement from Lokapur to Goa. “In return, we transport steel from Goa to be supplied to Belgaum and North Karnataka. However, the entry tax by Goa is bound to jeopardize these age-old trading ties with Goa,” he added.
Defying the AIMTC warning, vehicles of the Goa Horticulture Corporation loaded vegetables at the warehouses owned by the corporation in the market yard area along the outskirts of Belgaum.
