Raising concerns over the inaction of the police and the local panchayat in curbing nefarious activities taking place near St Jacinto Bridge, the villagers have demanded stringent action against those involved in late night parties on the bridge and who leave behind broken and empty liquor bottles.
The demand is spearheaded by the Chicalim Villagers Action Committee (CVAC), Parish Priest of St Hyacinth Church Fr Eliseu Barreto and the residents of St Jacinto Island.
The residents say that they have raised the issue several times in past, however, after few days of police patrolling, the situation never improved.
“It is high time that the police as well as the panchayat realized that the residents as well as the faithful visiting St Hyacinth Church on St Jacinto Island have been facing serious problems especially during nights due to night parties, broken or empty liquor bottles on the bridge,” said Rui Araujo, a CVAC member.
Fr Barreto said that the residents are upset and disappointed at the police and the local panchayat for failing to curb the menace of late night parties at St Jacinto Bridge.
“The Panchayat authorities had installed CCTV cameras to keep vigil on such illegal activities, but it appears that the CCTV is not functioning; similarly, the fancy street lights too are not working leaving the bridge in dark. Thus, the people take advantage of the same and use the bridge for wrong purpose which needs to be stopped completely,” Fr Barreto said.
