MARGAO: The Citizens for Sonsodo (CFS) has demanded immediate execution of the bio-mining project to clear the existing garbage dump at Sonsoddo.
The CFS has warned the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) of protests if the civic body fails to start the project to clear the existing garbage dump immediately after monsoon.
It has also warned the MLAs in the Sub Committee of Sonsoddo to restrain from taking anti-people decisions. At a press conference addressed by the Citizens for Sonsoddo, they have warned that delay by the concerned authorities in the clearing the existing dump will result in people coming on to the streets in protest with full might. The CFS has also reminded the concerned authorities that people in the past have strongly agitated against this nuisance by coming on the streets.
“CFS cautions that this dump yard, which is a health hazard besides being a long pending nuisance to the people staying in and around the vicinity and the surrounding villages of the dump, should be immediately cleared” said Roque Mascarenhas.
CFS has warned that the MLAs and representatives in the Sub-Committee on Waste Management at Sonsoddo, who represent their people, should not play into the hands of vested interests and work against their own people. Wrong decisions by these MLAs and representatives will have repercussions”. It expressed hope that better sense prevails in clearing the Sonsoddo dump yard as had been decided earlier by way of bio-mining process, without further delay.
“The MLAs of Margao, Fatorda and Curtorim along with Margao Municipal Council officials have been reportedly working to retain the dump and revert back to capping. The decision on capping will result in permanently losing prime land worth crores of rupees. The retaining of the dump will result in creation of poisonous gases and underground water contamination,” CFS added.
The existing dump is an eyesore to passer-by and CFS has been fighting for the last 2 years to clear the existing dump by way of bio-mining.
In this regard, the High Powered Committee chaired by the chief minister had decided that capping the existing dump at the site is not the best solution and the same has to be bio-mined.
GSUDA was appointed as a nodal agency to clear/remove the Sonsodo dump yard after the HPC changed its decision to do scientific capping and instead go in for bio-mining process and clear the dump.
A consultant Ajay Jain from Eco Pro Environmental Services, Indore, MP was appointed and Sonsodo contract for bio-mining was awarded to Black Berry Overseas Pvt Ltd, New Delhi.
