PONDA: Residents of Madpai and Tariwada in Tiverem-Orgao Panchayat are unhappy over the recent decision of the elected representatives to set up garbage treatment plant at Madapai-Marcela.
According to reports, Priol MLA and Minister for Cooperation Deepak Dhavlikar had recently chaired a meeting which was attended by the sarpanchas of Tiverem-Orgao, Betki-Khandola and Bhoma-Adcolna panchayats.
During the meeting, the comunidade land at Madapai admeasuring about 10,000 sq mtrs was identified and part of the land is being short listed to set up the garbage treatment plant, where garbage from the three panchayats will be treated.
Residents claimed that the area identified to set up garbage treatment plant is bordering four wards and there are several residences in the vicinity.
“Residents have opposed the proposed garbage plant and I’m also against it. I have spoken to Priol MLA Dhavlikar regarding the issue and he has assured to look into the matter,” said Madpai Panch Umesh Bhosle.
When contacted, Tiverem-Orgao Sarpanch Francis Lobo said the panchayat will soon convene a meeting of residents before going ahead with the proposed project.
“I heard that some people are against the idea to set up garbage treatment plant at Madpai. Of the 10,000 sq mtrs land, about 1,000 sq mtrs will be utilised for garbage plant, while the remaining for other developmental works,” Lobo told Herald.
“I have spoken to Dhavlikar and will soon convene a meeting of residents to discuss the issue. People will be taken into confidence and the non-polluting garbage project is like that of Ponda Municipal Council, which was recently inaugurated at Ponda market complex,” added Lobo.
