MARGAO: Margao’s historic Lohia Maidan will play host to a public meeting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) on January 24, at 03.30 pm.
The public gathering has been organised by the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), joined by the National Confederation for Human Rights Organisations (Goa Unit) and Concerned Citizens of Goa in registering their total disapproval against the CAA, NRC and NPR.
Fr Savio Fernandes, Executive Secretary, CSJP, Rajan Solomon, working president, NCHRO – Goa Unit and Samir Shaikh, president, Concerned Citizens of Goa were present at the press briefing.
“It is our common conviction that these measures are unconstitutional and therefore unacceptable. The government must listen to the voice of the people and withdraw the Act. It can then engage in wide consultation if it still wishes to proceed with any form of legislation regarding citizenship. If it arrogates power to enforce the laws, it will face stubborn and unceasing resistance,” warned Fr Savio.
When asked how Goans are going to be affected by CAA/NR/NPR, Solomon said, “We condemn the denial of permissions to democratically requested protests all over the country. The act is more than just an innocent move of giving citizenship to the persecuted.”
