In a distressing incident on Valentine’s Day, a young woman from Sanquelim suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a young man, Manthan Gawde, a 24-year-old from Kalwada-Usgao. The incident occurred as the woman, employed at a mushroom factory in Usgao, was making her usual morning commute. While walking along a secluded path towards her workplace at 6 a.m., she was viciously assaulted by Manthan, who struck her on the head with a beer bottle. Despite her efforts to flee, she was left injured and alone in a remote area for nearly two to two and a half hours, enduring critical bleeding from her head.
Fortunately, around 9 a.m., the injured woman managed to reach the main road, where concerned passers-by discovered her in a pool of blood and promptly rushed her to Goa Medical College for urgent medical attention. The severity of her condition prompted immediate action from the Ponda police, who launched an investigation into the incident.

It was revealed that Manthan had been infatuated with the victim, who had repeatedly rejected his advances. Despite a prior complaint lodged against him for harassment, Manthan continued to torment the young woman, prompting police intervention and warnings to cease contact. However, his persistent harassment persisted, culminating in the violent attack on Valentine’s Day.
Following the assault, Manthan attempted to end his life by jumping from the Usgao bridge. However, he was swiftly apprehended by police, who found him on the riverbank after he had swum to shore. He has since been detained, and further investigations are being conducted by Ponda Police.
