PANJIM: The April 12 elections for Lok Sabha in Goa, has forced the preponing of internal school examinations and compressing of the academic calendar.
The Education Department has accordingly directed schools to complete conduct of internal exams by April 10.
According to the earlier schedule, the final exams for schools were to begin only after April 9, giving schools 220 instructional days.
Most institutions which complete the syllabus and instruction days by March 27 were unable to conduct exams before April 9.
The latest circular now directs schools to conduct the second semester final exams by the first week of April and wind up by April 10.
Herald has learnt that a few schools are scheduling the second semester exams by the end of March itself.
Some schools which have been engaged for Goa Board exams and have given students a break are likely to play it safe and seek relaxation in the number of working days and instruction days if they have to pre-pone the school exams.
Heads of institutions also say that children this year could have an early start to the vacations from April 10 instead of the earlier vacation schedule from May 1.
Teachers however claim that they would get more time to correct papers as results of the final (second semester) exams have to be declared only by April 30.
