Maclon’s death: Many yet to come to terms

Velim: “You should never have to have the experience of burying your own child,” said two men talking to each other outside St Francis Xavier Church, Velim as the villagers waited for the funeral cortege of Maclon Fernandes to leave the house.

At 3.45 pm, the procession of people started entering the church compound with family members and relatives carrying the body. The brass band punctured the air with their notes and their melody striking a somber chord with the sea of humanity, as the 800 odd villagers gathered at the church.
Fr Ivo Fernandes in his homily stressed on how life is in the hands of the almighty who knows which flower to pick from the garden. Fr Fernandes spoke highly of Maclon, known as Mackles and how the 21 year-old boy had a plethora of strong qualities from always wanting to help others and helping his parents and family to becoming a singer, a dancer.
Family members praised Maclon and expressed their sadness at the loss of their loved one. The parish youth and friends of the boy also spoke about his warm personality and how he was always around to offer a helping hand. Many parishioners were still shocked about how they were talking to him earlier this week and how they would miss him terribly.
Velim Zilla Panchayat member Anthony Babush Rodrigues and local legislator Benjamin Silva were among those present at the funeral service.
