MARGAO: A resident of Maddel-Margao has served a seven days notice on the District Collector to hold a dharna against a city-based school for allegedly denying admissions to children living in close proximity to the school.
In his notice, the resident Savio Dias has drawn the attention of the Collector to the rejection of admissions to the two children by the school, adding that they could not be admitted in any other school, even as the new academic year begins tomorrow, June 5.
Saying that local residents have chalked out plans to hold a dharna near the school premises over the admission issue, Dias claimed that students from outside Margao jurisdiction have received admissions in the school, while denying the facility to children from the immediate neighbourhood.
Dias also drew attention of the chief minister to his pledge that priority would be given to students in the immediate neighbourhood of the respective schools for admission, up to a certain percentage.
“The CM has assured the House that those who stay within congested areas like Panjim and Margao within 500 meters from the school will have to be given priority for admission in their neighbouring schools,” he said, adding that the CM’s assurance have not changed the ground reality yet.
