MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco on Monday urged the State government to amend the notification issued by Home Department and the scheme of financial assistance to seafarers should be made permanent for the benefit of retired seamen and their widows.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Curtorim MLA had requested the government for the redressal of 18 months old non-pension issue of the seafarers.
“The Goan Seafarers Association (GSAI) has brought to my notice that by the notification dated June 25, 2021, that a scheme is framed to provide financial assistance in the form of gross pension of Rs 2,500 per month to the retired India seamen which will come in force on June 1, 2021, and it shall remain in force up to November 30, 2021,” he stated.
He said that it is requested by the GSAI that all eligible seamen/widows should be paid all their due arrears from October 2019 the day since the pension was stopped or at least the scheme should be been implemented.
“It is not at all fair as it makes mockery of our seamen and their widows, as the scheme will remain enforced only for six months. Hence, the government should amend the notification and the scheme should be made permanent for the benefit of retired seamen and their widows,” he urged.
