MAPUSA:  Around 220 daily wage workers of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) protested outside the Mapusa Municipality demanding that their wages be hiked from Rs 499 to Rs 800.

On Wednesday, the daily wage workers met MMC officials and questioned them over delay in monthly salary. The civic officials replied saying that the salary would be credited. The workers sought to know the status of their demand for hike in their daily wages which is pending for several years.

The workers claimed that due to salary delay they are forced to face several issues and refused to join the second shift.

They said at present they get Rs 450 per day which is difficult for them to manage with Rs 11,440 monthly salary. MMC Chief Officer Kabir Shirgaonkar said, “I have been told that the protest was about salary but we have paid them their salaries. Whatever is their demand will look into their issue”.

On Thursday morning, a delegation of daily wage workers held a joint meeting with Mapusa municipality officials.

Following assurance from the CO, the workers on Thursday joined duty and resumed door-to-door garbage collection.
