It will work to implement street vendors policy

PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has constituted a Town Vending Committee as per the directives of Supreme Court to implement the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood) Policy 2009.
At a special council meeting, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari informed the councillors that Director of Urban Development has directed MMC to comply with the order of the Supreme Court and constitute Town Vending Committee in accordance with the provisions contained in the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood) Policy 2009.
Falari stated that as per the provisions of the Policy 2009 ‘Street Vendor’ is a person who offers goods or services for sale to public on a street without having a permanent built-up structure.
“There are three basic categories of vendors – stationary, peripatetic and mobile. All the existing street vendors/hawkers operating within the jurisdiction of the municipal councils should be allowed to operate till the exercise of registration and creation of vending/hawking zone is completed in terms of the Policy 2009,” informed Falari.
“Further, all the street vendors/hawkers should be registered as per the provisions of Policy 2009 within 4 months of the order of the Supreme Court dated September 9, 2013. The constituted committee is required to monitor activities of the vendors/hawkers,” added Falari.
After the discussion, the Town Vending Committee of 11 members constituted was chief officer of MMC (chairperson), Police Inspector Traffic, Sudhir Kandolkar, Manisha Kavelker, Ratnapal Salker, Laximan Dessai, Urmilla Naik, Yeshwant Gaudalker, Sudhesh Assotiker, Paresh Chodanker and Subhadra Naik Chowgule.
