MAPUSA: Mapusa fish market vendors on Friday met Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Clen Madeira to discuss the chaos that occurred between them and the MMC staff on Thursday.
The delegation led by the President of the Mapusa Fish Vendors Association, Shashikala Govekar put forward its grievances to the Chief Officer and asked him to look into the matter.
The vendors complained to the CO that the MMC staffers are rude and aggressive with them and demanded that the Market Inspector be removed.
Giving them a patient ear, the CO said that he cannot assure anything as he will discuss the issue with the council. He made it clear to them that they cannot sit on the floor with their baskets to sell fish neither at the entrance of the fish market as they had raised areas demarcated for them. With regards their demand to remove the market inspector, he said the MMC will look into it.
MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza informed Herald that to streamline things in the fish market MMC staff was seizing baskets of those vendors found sitting on the floor and creating a nuisance.
“The fish vendors are used to doing whatever they want and this is happening for the last many years. They are demanding the removal of the Market Inspector because she is strict and trying to maintain discipline in the market. She is doing her job and correcting them as they are not willing to accept. We will continue to clear the baskets that are kept on the floor,” said Ryan.
In defiance to the warning given to them, the fish vendors on Friday were spotted sitting on the floor selling fish by blocking the free passage of market-goers.
