MAPUSA: After identifying 13 weak and dangerous structures in its jurisdiction, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will issues notices to its owners and tenants.
Further steps as per the technical and legal procedures will be initiated.
MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza said that of the 13 structures identified 11 are private properties.
“Notices will be issued to the owners and tenants of the 13 dangerous structures immediately. They will be asked to either vacate the place or repair the structure to prevent any untoward incident. The old mamlatdar building and Junta Quarters are also in a dilapidated condition. If they fail to act within the prescribed time frame we will demolish them and the cost will be incurred by the owner,” said Ryan.
“Earlier, we had sent notices to them as well but they failed to act. Few of these structures are still occupied while the others are lying vacant. Our job is to identify a dangerous structure and direct them but the tenants need to make an alternate arrangement,” he added.
The MMC action comes in the wake of the incident that occurred on Sunday wherein a portion of an old building which once houses the old office of Civil Registrar-Cum-Sub-Registrar at Feira-Alta, Mapusa collapsed on the main road.
Sources revealed that the Chief Officer has the right to issue notices to vacate or demolish structures that are identified as unsafe within the municipal jurisdiction. At the same time it was learnt that some of the owners want to demolish the building but the tenants are not willing to vacate the place until they make some alternate arrangement.
