PONDA/PERNEM: Two cases of drowning were been reported in the State with one in a quarry at Ozari, Pernem and the another in Kodar River on Sunday.

In the first incident, 20-year-old Nilesh Pandey, a resident of Xelpem, Mapusa is reported to have met a watery grave in a quarry at Ozari, Pernem.
According to Pernem fire officials, a group of 10 persons from Mapusa had gone to Ozari. The group initially visited a spring in the village. Since the spring was crowded they later went to the laterite quarry at Perkon, Ozari. The group ventured into the quarry, which was partially filled. However, while having bath, Nilesh started struggling in the waters, the other group members tried to help him but could not save him.
One of the group members informed the police and fire station. The team of Pernem fire personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved Nilesh’s body.
Pernem Police have booked a case of unnatural death. PSI Vivek Halarnkar is investigating the case.
Nilesh, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was a second year engineering student residing in a hotel at Vasco.
However, during holidays and weekends, he used to come to stay with his family at Xelpem, Mapusa.
In the second incident, 18-year-old Sunny Mathur, a resident of Banastarim-Adkon and native of Jharkhand was reported feared drowned in the Kodar River.
According to Ponda Police, they received a call that a boy, went reportedly missing at around 4 pm. It is learnt that six others of the same age had gone on a picnic to the Kodar River. However, one of his friends after bathing in the river noticed Sunny getting drowned, following which the Ponda Police and Fire Personnel were called, who immediately rushed to the spot. However, despite search operation, Sunny could not be traced.
