Mapusa restaurant kitchen goes up in flames

Prompt action from fire personnel saves property worth Rs 9 lakh

MAPUSA: Babaji Classic Restaurant located on the 1st floor of Buildmore Business Park Building at Khorlim-Mapusa caught fire on Wednesday.

According to Mapusa Fire Station in charge Bosco Ferrao, the fire station received a call at 6.18 pm informing that Babaji Classic Restaurant located at Khorlim have caught fire. Immediately, a fire personnel team was dispatched to the spot. After reaching there, it was learnt that restaurant kitchen has caught fire. Immediately, the fire personnel started the operation and within 40 minutes the fire was doused off.

Ferrao informed they suspect that when one of the kitchen employees was cooking a dish in oil the pan must have caught fire, which further reached to the electric panel located close by leading to short circuit and the fire spreading all over. Since there was no proper ventilation, the kitchen later got filled with smoke due to which the fire personal had to use breathing apparatus while fighting the fire. Two fire tender vehicles were pressed into service to douse off the fire completely.

Kitchen of the restaurant is located on the first of the building. Owner Devendra Dhawaskar estimated a loss of Rs 2 lakh while managing to save property worth Rs 9 lakh. Meanwhile, Mapusa Fire Station will be writing to the Electricity Department to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
