MAPUSA: Vendors at the flower market in Mapusa are up in arm against the decision of Mapusa Muncipal Council to demolish the flower market.
Concerned over the deteriorating condition of the flower market, the MMC had recently decided to demolish the structure and to construct the multi-storeyed market in its place.
The present flower market is also being used by dried fish and bread vendors. There are also tailoring and other small shops in this market.
Furious over MMC’s decision, all vendors in the flower market have decided to prevent the MMC from demolishing the market.
Addressing the issue at a meeting in the market, All Goa Merchants Federation Chairman Narayan Karekar described the structure as one of the oldest buildings constructed during Portuguese regime.
“No doubt, the building has become old, but it can be certainly repaired and painted. The construction of this building is quite good. Some of the vendors are doing the business since liberation. Their business is well established and as such, it is not advisable to disturb their business activities,” said Karekar.
Mapusa Merchants Association President Yeshwant Gawandalker admitted that the Mapusa Muncipal market had already become congested.
“If MMC demolishes the flower market, where would all these vendors do their business? Since the issue involves the livelihood of several vendors, they will meet Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza and MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari, requesting them not to demolish the existing the flower market, but to repair the structure,” said Gawandalker.
