Margao civic body draws flack for leakage in municipality building

Critisised for delay in pre-monsoon works

MARGAO:  The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) came under criticism for its much delayed pre-monsoon works which began a few days ago on May 18.

During the rains that took place on Friday, the ceiling of one of the rooms that are used by the councillors started to leak.

Opposition Councillor Camilo Barreto pulled up the council for failing to spot these issues in time and said there could be an incident where people in the building could be at risk. He also pointed to materials in the building that were getting wet due to the rains and pulled up the authorities for such a shabby state of affairs. Incidentally, the new Chief Officer was apprised of these issues.

Earlier councillor Ghanshyam Shirodker as well as the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) questioned the wisdom of the MMC to start the pre monsoon works so late and they pointed out that by the time the works are complete, locals would be forced to suffer from issues of water logging and related problems. It may be recalled that according to the tenders, the works are expected to be completed by July 2. At the last council meeting, councillors had feared that this would be too late and that the work should have been completed earlier given the size of MMC’s jurisdiction that covers 25 wards.
