MARGAO: The race for the chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council got more complicated on Tuesday with councillor Ganashyam Shirodkar filing his nomination for the post, taking on Damodar alias Damu Shirodkar, a councillor backed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.

Based on a verbal agreement between the two panels led by Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, a councillor from the Margao camp was supposed to lead the civic body, after the 15-month tenure of Lyndon Perreira ended last month.

Ganashayam’s name has been proposed for the post by Camilo Barreto, Mahesh Amonkar and Sunita Paradkar, the councillors from the BJP camp, and a total of three nomination forms have been submitted. The BJP panel consists of nine councillors and they require three more to achieve the majority to get Ganashayam elected.

Ganashayam told Herald that he has approached most of the councillors and all of them have assured him of their support.

“I will not approach any MLAs for support, but will surely try to convince all the councillors,” he said.

He said that he wants to do something good for the people of Margao and Fatorda and wants to set right the issues within the civic body.

Camilo Barreto said that all the nine councillors from the BJP camp will vote for Ganashayam to take on the post of chairperson. The earlier frontrunner, councillor Damodar Shirodkar told Herald that he will be filing his nomination on Thursday, September 15.

Meanwhile, notices pertaining to the meeting to elect a new chairperson have already been served to the councillors, and the meeting will be held on September 16. Additional Collector Srinet Kotwale will preside over the conduct of the special meeting.
