The demand of a burial ground for the Muslim brethren of Salcete and surrounding areas has seen several Governments come and go. However, these requests have hit several roadblocks in the past and now after the work finally began, it has hit yet another hindrance.
Representations to all the successive district collectors for almost 23 years have forced the Muslims to adjust in the small area by removing old burials to make space for new ones.
The PWD contractor, who started the work for the burial ground near Sonsodo was asked to stop work after the residents of Raia complained of dispute over the ownership of the land.
The Congress regime had acquired comunidade land in Margao admeasuring 99,500 sq mts.
Meanwhile, the residents have demanded to know how the govt and the TCP have given the permission to convert the land into kabrastan.
The petitioner in the Margao Kabrastan case has alleged a local MLA of having created confusion in the new burial ground work for political gains. The petitioner Matin Carol has also declined the claims of the protestors at the plot of the land being owned by the Raia Fabrica.
Matin told Herald that the orders of the National Commission for Minorities have not been followed.
