Margao meet suggests slew of measures to ease traffic

In a bid to ease traffic congestion, the district Magistrate, South G P Naik has called for concerted efforts for the removal of religious structures and all illegal constructions from road sides.
The district Magistrate further suggested to the PWD to move a proposal for acquisition of land to connect the missing link of Margao Ring Road, with a further suggestion to ask the Goa Rehabilitation Board to rehabilitate the displaced people.
A high level district meeting held to review the traffic scenario in Margao has further recommended a ban on gaddas within a radius of 100 meters at all the traffic junctions. In this connection, the Margao Municipal Chairperson, Savio Coutinho suggested that the PWD mark the 100 meters area around the junctions to deny licenses for business establishments.
The Traffic police have again called for phasing out the 130 city buses entering Margao causing traffic congestion in the city. DySP Traffic, Gajanan Prabhudesai further suggested that buses coming from Quepem, Sanguem and Curchorem can be diverted towards the Konkan railway station side. The suggestion will be placed before the next RTA meeting for consideration.
The meeting constituted a 10-member committee under the chairmanship of Superintending Engineer, J P De Souza to monitor the construction of traffic islands wherever necessary and to restructure the existing ones. Other members of the committee includes SDPO, Margao, Margao Municipal engineer, SDM, Margao, Assistant Director of Transport, PWD Executive Engineer, DySP, traffic, PI traffic, Engineer Ernest Moniz, architect Sameer Nadkarni and consulting engineer Pascoal B Noronha.
A direction was issued to the Margao Municipal Council to construct footpath near the city petrol pumps as was existing earlier. The MMC was told to recover the cost from the petrol pumps.
The district Magistrate further instructed the PWD to ensure that the street lights are functioning at the Railway over bridge and near the state Bank of India.
