Margao municipality employees likely to receive net salaries only due to insufficient funds for gross payments

The Margao Municipal Corporation (MMC) is facing a major challenge in meeting its salary commitments to employees, with the likelihood that only net salaries will be disbursed to employees on Wednesday due to a lack of sufficient funds in its reserves. The monthly salary bill for the salaried employees at MMC amounts to a staggering Rs. 1.80 crores, while the daily wage workers’ wage bill totals around 40 lakhs.

This recurring issue for the last 2 months of struggling to fulfil salary payments, including those for daily wage workers, has persisted, causing concern and uncertainty among the employees. Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar cites administrative shortcomings as the cause and stresses the urgent need for better revenue recovery from municipal properties.

“The chairperson cannot be the only one asking the dept heads to credit the salaries of the employees, each dept head should take that responsibility on. When inquired about the salary, they say there are no funds, so whose job is it to collect revenue? If this continues, then the Margao municipality will turn into Sanguem and Vasco,” said Shirodkar.
