Margao municipality ill-treating daily wage workers: Ex-chief

MARGAO: On World Labour Day, former chairman of Margao Municipal Council and convener of Shadow Council for Margao Savio Coutinho lambasted the council for treating the daily wage workers in a shabby manner and not resolving any of their grievances.
He said regularization of their services, refunding the excess provident fund deducted from their wages and even providing them proper gear to carry out their work specially to the waste handlers, are some issues that have not been resolved for months on end. He also pointed out that one labourer Laman Zamune who was injured with a medical needle was terminated from service instead of being given compensation for injuries sustained while on duty.
While pointing out that the daily wage workers are made to work on public holidays without any compensation while regular workers are either paid extra amount or given a compensatory off. “It may be recalled that recently two holidays were declared upon the deaths of Francis D’Souza and Manohar Parrikar. On both these public holidays the daily wage workers worked but were not compensated in any form,” Coutinho stated.
