Margao old market drains covered

MARGAO: Residents of Old Market area are very happy that the municipal council has undertaken the work of improving the drain running by the side of their houses and covering it with slabs due to which they will no longer have to bear the stench emanating from the drain.
The drain used to flush out water from Borda to the river Sal by passing by the side of houses next to the civil court at Old Market. However, as the drain was not properly maintained water used to stagnate and the putrefying material in it would release obnoxious odours which the people had to bear.
The ward councilor Glen Andrade has constructed retaining wall on both sides of the drain in Old Market area to a length of about 70 metres and is presently covering the drain with concrete slabs so that nobody thrown any waste in the drain.
Anthony Noronha whose house is next to the drain was all praise to Glenn for undertaking this work that was neglected all these years. “We had to bear horrible smell all these years and now we can get some relief,” he said adding that the locals have decided to put a net over the drain wherever the concrete slab could  not be erected due to pipe connections.
