MARGAO: Residents of the Margao objected to the sale of flowers and other goods by migrants along the roadside.
Speaking to the media persons, a local Croydon Medeira alleged that the ‘incompetent’ Margao Municipal Council (MMC) market employees are allowing vendors to continue selling despite asking them to shut their sales. He alleged that it is a scam by the sopo collector.
He said the civic body is ill-prepared for any illegalities. Either they have no power to do it or the staff are benefiting from it.
“Today both the market inspectors were on leave. They should not need complaints to act and should do it as a regular task as part of their job. Today, when a complaint was lodged and a pickup was asked for so that the material could be confiscated,” said Croydon.
He also said that every evening there is a market, which comes up in front of the Margao Municipal Council after 6 pm. It is totally illegal but the Council does nothing about it. Also at the same time on station road one sees all migrant vendors selling vegetables and fruits along the roadside.
“This shows that the municipality is entrenched in corruption though they have passed a resolution to remove fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc, sold by migrant vendors from the roadside. This drive should take place twice a day at random hours,” he demanded.
