Margao waste collection: shops too included

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has extended the ongoing door-to-door waste collection exercise to the town’s shops and establishments.

The civic body, however, is yet to take a call on the fees to be levied on the commercial establishments. Also, it has no data on the number of commercial establishments, including offices, located in the commercial capital.
MMC daily wage workers, who were recruited to handle waste generated from the households, are now being engaged to collect waste from shops and offices during the evening sessions as part of the plan to make optimum use of the manpower.
When Herald contacted a senior municipal official, he said the shops and establishments will have to make their necessary arrangements to procure waste bins.
“The civic body has made provision for bins to the households. The shops and commercial establishments will have to procure their own bins in their establishments”, the official said.
Replying to a question, the official said that it is purely left to the Margao civic body to take a call on the quantum of fees to be levied on the commercial establishments.
So far, the council has only decided to levy Rs one per day on each household as the fee for garbage collection.
