MARGAO: Margao, the State’s, which is also known as commercial capital of Goa witnessed a massive crowd for the Carnival floats parade on Sunday.
Fun and frolic was the order of the day in Margao on Sunday, besides other parts of Salcete taluka.

The floats parade began with the entry of the King Momo Emiliano Dias, who is also from the neighbouring village of Raia. Nearly 70 floats in different categories participated in the parade. The enthusiasm amongst the people was the same as before.
Hundreds of people had lined up from the Opinion Poll Square till the Borkar Super Market at Fatorda since the afternoon. Initially the float rally was delayed for an hour, as children along with their parents, besides several domestic tourists, were eagerly waiting to witness the Carnival floats after a long gap due to COVID-19 pandemic.
At the main stage erected near the Borkar Super Market traditional Kunbi dance was performed by the group of Fatorda. The street was decked up with masks and streamers giving it a festive look. However, the long gaps between floats led to people losing interest in watching the parade. Padma Shri awardee Brahamand Sankhwalkar was present as a chief guest, besides several other guests including Ruchika Katyal, South Goa District Collector, and Agnelo Fernandes, President of Margao Carnival Committee, and Chief Officer of Margao Municipality.
On a positive note, there seemed to be a greater focus on environment themes in the parade. Several floats depicted issues, Goa’s heritage and culture.
The centre point of attraction at the Margao float parade was the float highlighting the issue of mass destruction of the environment and forests. ‘Save Frogs’ were the other attractive floats seen in the parade. Many groups highlighting the traditional occupations of Goa were also seen. Traditional Curtorim float led by Alcino D’Silva stole the limelight.
A float with the message to save the animals was very impressive in the presentation. An appeal for farming activity was also attractive. However, many citizens took strong objection to one of the floats in which one participant was noticed in vulgar costumes.
