MARGAO: The Goa Maritime Officers Association (GMOA) called for revising the taxation of seamen at the recent Seafarers’ Day celebration held in Margao.
Benaulim MLA Captain Venzy Viegas emphasised the need for this reform, pledging to raise the issue in the next assembly session.

He also urged Maritime Union of India (MUI) officials to advocate for this cause at the national level.
The focus on improving conditions for maritime professionals underscored the event’s commitment to addressing industry challenges.
Captain of Ports Octavio Rodrigues, MUI general secretary Capt Tushar Pradan, Healing Centre Founder Captain Norbert Rebello and Buoyancy Consultancy Founder Prasad Sawant were present.
In a gesture of social responsibility, the GMOA presented cheques to Capt Norbert and ‘Anchor of Hope’, an NGO run by the wives of maritime officers, acknowledging their contributions towards the betterment of society.
Maritime officers were felicitated on the ocassion.
GMOA said, “We are a strong community of maritime officers dedicated to supporting our members, reinforcing their commitment to fostering unity and professional growth within the sector.”
Master Noel Fernandes, son of Chief Engineer Merwyn Fernandes was presented the first prize.
