MARGAO:  Virtually expressing its helplessness in cracking a whip against the illegal trade and fish cutting in the wholesale fish market, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has sought the help and assistance of the district collector and the police to bring order in the market.
The PDA has also served a show cause notice to the market contractor, who was supposed to ensure cleanliness of the market premises and ensure a stop to the illegal trade and fishing cutting.
PDA legal counsel on Wednesday submitted before the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao Sangeeta Naik that the Authority has initiated various measures in the wholesale fish market including a letter written to the Margao police to treat any person entering the wholesale fish market property after 10 am as a trespass.
During hearing of the petition filed by a local resident of Madel Savio Dias, the PDA submitted that a letter had already gone to the Margao police to initiate action against vendors doing illegal retail trade as well as fishing cutting beyond 10 am.
The SDM was also informed that the PDA is planning to appoint an officer to keep a close track of the illegal activities in the market.
In another letter to the Margao Municipal Chief Officer, the PDA has requested the Civic body to stop the illegal trade within the wholesale fish market after 10 am. Wednesday morning saw a team of Margao Municipal workers descended at the wholesale fish market and confiscating fish baskets which were kept for sale along the road side.
