Market tenants’ association objects

PANJIM: With just a few days left for the implementation of the ambitious pay-parking project at 18 places in the capital city, the municipal market tenants association has petitioned Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to withdraw the proposal stating that the “introduction of pay parking in the areas near market will affect the business of the market traders”.

Association president Rajendra Dhamaskar has sought Chief Minister’s intervention in the matter requesting him to direct the Corporation of the City of Panaji and District Collector not to implement pay-parking in and around the municipal market, as the decision will lead to lot of chaos and inconvenience to the people visiting the market on a regular basis.
“If at all, CCP wants to provide pay-parking areas, the government and the corporation ought to have constructed proper parking facilities and infrastructure for the general public,” he said.
The North Goa Collector through a notification issued on August 8 had announced pay parking at 18 places, to be effective from September 15. The four wheelers would be charged Rs 10 and two wheelers Rs 2.
“We strongly object and condemn the decision of the CCP as the same will affect the businesses being conducted by the traders or occupants of the market, who somehow manage to earn their livelihood. The arbitrary decision has been taken despite the fact that enough pay-parking area provided in the municipal market building,” Dhamaskar said.
The petition copy has also been submitted to North Goa Collector, CCP Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration.
