Mayem farmers threaten to block ore transport by Sesa

Demand settlement of their dues before ore transportation; Truck owners too demand hike in charges

BICHOLIM: The transportation of e-auctioned ore of Sesa through Mayem-Vaiginim might run into rough weather with the farmers deciding not to allow the transportation till their dues are settled.
The farmers are sour over the fact that their long pending demand of compensation has not been met and they claim that the company is avoiding them. To add to this, the recently held gram sabha has also resolved to support the farmers and not to allow transportation.
The transportation of ore from the mine would also face a serious problem as the truck owners have also been demanding increase in the transportation charges. Several meetings in this regard were held in the Bicholim deputy collector’s office but the issue is still not resolved.
During the recently held gram sabha it was informed that the panchayat is still to recover about Rs 14 lakh in the form of taxes from the mining company. In this respect, it was resolved that till the company pays the dues of the panchayat and the farmers they would not allow transportation of ore from the village.
“We have had several meeting with the deputy collector and have put forth our demands but still the government has not given us favourable reply. We would wait for another eight days and would later decide upon the future course of action.” Bicholim truck owner association general secretary, Subhash Kinalkar said.
