PANJIM: Old Goa police have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly cheating and raping a woman he met through a matrimonial website and promising to marry her.
Saiprasad Kerkar from Merces was arrested on Saturday based on a complaint filed by a Mumbai-based 30-year-old divorcee who accused him of raping her on several occasions on the pretext of marrying her.
“They met through a matrimonial website where Kerkar, a divorcee promised to marry her. The victim then visited Goa to meet him when he forced her to develop physical relations on the promise of marriage, but later refused to marry her,” PI Krishna Sinari said.
The woman then filed a complaint with a Mumbai police station from where the case was transferred to Old Goa, based on the crime jurisdiction.
The accused has been remanded to three days police custody for custodial interrogation. The investigating officer is also probing whether the man has duped other women with a similar modus operandi.
