Migrant workers in Sanguem running out of food, money

SANGUEM: The migrant labourers in Sanguem residing at various places in rented premises are reportedly facing grave problems in getting grocery items simply because they have run out of money.

With no financial aid having come from government authorities and neither any provision being made for free supply of groceries, the migrant workers are left with no other alternative but to approach individuals in the nearby localities to beg for food grains lest they die of hunger.

The government has assured financial aid and free ration quota to needy people holding white ration cards, but majority of these migrant labourers don’t possess ration cards. Therefore, they are likely to continue to suffer even if the government provides aid to the needy.

Meanwhile, with many social organisations and political leaders having come out with their list of persons working on the home delivery, non-availability of major items at the designated grocery stores has put the people in a quandary. Sources however claim that the desired stock of grocery items is expected to reach the market on Sunday and this would solve the problem of short supply of grocery items.

Meanwhile, locals here have suggested that free supply of grocery items to the needy may be channelled through (booth level officers) BLOs as they are well versed with the locality and even have contact numbers of the people living within the jurisdiction of the areas allocated to them.
