BEGALUM: Stating that the ban on mining activities in Goa has opened up wider opportunities for imports and exports at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), the MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan has said efforts are on to establish MPT as a multi-commodity port.

Pandiyan was addressing the trade meet in Belgaum on Thursday evening, which was organised by Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) and Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

The port delegation was led by its Chairman P Mara Pandiyan, who briefed the gathering of enhanced facilities at MPT and also assured traders, industrialists and exporters in Belgaum of maximum possible cooperation in exporting all kinds of goods. Traffic Manager and senior deputy Traffic Manager, MPT, were also part of the delegation.

“The MPT, which has 11 berths and a capacity to handle traffic on par with other major ports, was unfortunately known for iron exports all these years. However, a ban on mining operations has opened up wider opportunities for imports and exports in MPT and special efforts are on to establish its image as a multi-commodity port,” stated Pandiyan and urged exporters from Belgaum to make good use of the port to enhance their trade at a comparatively minimal cost.

Speaking on the occasion, BCCI President Satish Tendulkar said BCCI intends to develop Belgaum through its industrial development and utilize facilities to boost trade and industry.

“Belgaum is one of the major commercial and industrial hubs of Karnataka. Looking at the proximity of Belgaum to Goa, MPT is more ideal than other ports and it can certainly help enhance the industrial growth in Belgaum and the region,” stated Tendulkar.

District Industries Center JT Director A P Parade, MD of Wet Coast Paper Mills R K Chopra, Khwaja Sarfaraz Nawaz of Aspinwall & Co, Goa, Sudir Gadem of Amith Cargo Movers and number of exporters and industrialists were present.
