Minor rape case: second police constable still at large

Pernem police is yet to trace second police constable, who is involved in raping a minor girl at a hotel in Poraskadem-Pernem on May 6.
It may be recalled that Police Constable Rajesh Sawant was arrested on charges of kidnapping and raping a minor girl. Constable Sawant had allegedly demanded money from an agent involved in flesh trade and had also sought sexual gratification with a minor girl.
Later, constable Sawant revealed that he along with another constable, who is presently absconding, were involved in taking bribes from an agent and had taken a minor girl to a hotel, where they raped her.
Meanwhile, police have seized Alto car and Rs 25,000 from constable Sawant at his residence at Mandrem.
Police have also recorded statements of some persons in connection with the case. PI Uttam Raut Dessai is investigating the case.
THEFT: A 19-year-old boy from Vengurla was arrested in connection with the theft case in Pernem.
According to Pernem police, one Mandar Sadanand Navar was arrested on charges of stealing a donation box from a temple in Kerim-Pernem. Police said that the accused has provided the names of other person, who were involved in the case.
Police further said that they are hopeful of solving some more theft cases in Pernem taluka, following the arrest of Mandar. The accused was arrested under Section 380 of IPC.
