MARGAO: A puppy infected with rabies was one of the first strays picked up in Margao by the project’s dog catching team as Mission Rabies has got underway in the commercial Capital.
The Mission Rabies has set a target to sterilise around 12,000 dogs in Margao alone with the project targeting around 28,000 dogs for sterilisation across the State.
The campaign commenced with the sterilization of dogs at the mobile veterinary hospital at Colmorod, Navelim. The first surgery in the mobile hospital was conducted by Dr Sashi.
Former Margao municipal chairperson, Savio Coutinho, who has been appointed coordinator for mission rabies in Margao Area, said all the 20 municipal wards will be covered with the help of respective municipal councillors in this intensive campaign.
He appealed to the people of Margao and various social welfare clubs and organizations to support this Mission Rabies campaign in Margao so that it becomes an effective and successful. He appealed to the general public to cooperate with dog catchers so that they can catch maximum number of dogs per day.
A coalition of Goan NGOs, including International Animal Rescue, People for Animals, South Goa Welfare Trust for Animals, Welfare for Animals Goa, Panjim Animal Welfare Society, Goa SPCA and Goa Animal Welfare Trust, are proud to lead the fight against rabies in Goa by teaming up with Mission Rabies from April to September 2014.
This month, Mission Rabies has launched a six-month campaign with a pledge to surgically sterilize and vaccinate 28,000 dogs, or around 70% of the dog population, in Goa, to wipe out rabies.
