VASCO: Local MLA Alina Saldanha inspected the internal roads of Cortalim village with regards to the measures to be taken to prevent accidents and congestion on these roads that cause inconvenience to the people of the village.
During the inspection, the MLA brought to the notice of the officials the roads where road safety measures need to be put in place and strictly enforced. “The road from Cortalim junction to Thana junction and the one from Sotrant to Thana junction, where heavy vehicles are prohibited, need to be monitored for strict enforcement,” she said.
Another important stretch of the road connecting NH17 to the new diversion road parallel to KRC track was shown to the authorities, as this road is regularly used by students and the senior citizens going to church.
Cortalim Parish Priest Fr Pio Almeida raised fears over safety of students and the people of the area as the work on the diversion road has already begun and the heavy machinery/vehicles ply on this road putting life to risk.
Saldanha asked the officials to make all arrangements on this stretch of the road keeping in mind the safety of people. Also it was suggested to the road contractor not to carry on with the work on this road during the school hours, which was accepted by the Project Manager, who was present for the inspection. The traffic police were also requested to study the possibilities of installing traffic signals at this place to monitor the traffic and allow pedestrians to walk safely on this road.
Saldanha later told the media that non-implementation of prohibitory rules has led to accidents and some lost their lives on these roads including a senior citizen and a woman.
