VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Nandadeep Raut has requested the wholesale vendors to stop selling fish for two days whilst assuring them that the council would identify a suitable place for them to sell their fish.
A special joint meeting called by the Deputy Collector of Mormugao Sachin Desai on Monday was delayed for almost an hour after the president of Trawler Owners failed to report, giving an excuse that he had not received the invitation for the meeting. Some trawler owners were, however, present for the meeting.
After the start of the meeting was delayed, the Deputy Collector Sachin Desai, MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut, Police Inspector Nilesh Rane, DySP Raut Dessai and other government officials met the wholesale vendors for a brief discussion and came up with the request to stop their sale for two days
The wholesale fish vendors, who also own fishing trawlers, sell fish at a cheaper price using a scale. “We sell fish in kilogrammes using a scale. You can ask any fish buyer if they are not happy with the cheap price and the quality of the fish,” one of the wholesale vendors said.
Some of the vendors said they were not happy that their president was not invited for the meeting. The organisers of the meeting, however, said that an invitation was sent but regretted that it didn’t reach the association president.
Later speaking to the media, MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut said that “if anyone wants to do business in the municipal jurisdiction then he/she should obtain the necessary permission from the MMC.
