MMC chief calls for garbage-free Margao

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudesai on Saturday unfurled the tricolor to mark the Republic Day celebrations at the municipal building and urged the gathering to make it a mission to rid the town of the garbage menace.
She said the Council and municipal staff including the workers, who are the foot soldiers, have slogged it for the last 15 days to take up the mission of dealing with garbage collection and asked people to tell those littering the streets to stop.
“All of you must consider the roads to be your roads and tick off anybody who is dirtying them,” she said. Incidentally, the only councilors present when the flag was unfurled were Deepa Shirodkar, Avinash Shirodkar, Zita Crasto and Jaffar Budani. All other councillors including vice chairperson Tito Cardoso arrived later.
Incidentally, MMC has ordered 40,000 bins that will be distributed to each household in the municipal area while 700 housing societies have been identified who will be provided four bins to collect four types of garbage separately.
The Council has sought for three rickshaws from Goa State Urban Development Agency to transport the collected garbage and is waiting for the administrative approval to order two compactors and three trucks.
“Right now, we shall manage with the vehicles that we have,” said Dr Babita. The council at the moment has 5 compactors, 8 trucks and 8 rickshaws to transport the garbage.
