MARGAO: A surprise drive carried out by the Margao Municipal Council caught many a civic employee on the wrong foot while reporting late to work.

A day after assuming temporary charge as MMC Chief Officer, Additional Collector South Deepali Naik, ensured that employees reporting to work more than 10 minutes late were not allowed to sign the muster roll.

Around eight employees were caught napping on day one of the exercise, including an office superintendent, after they reported late. “We want to bring discipline in the civic body. We have no intention to harass anyone,” she added.

The episode raised questions over the late coming of the employees as the action comes against the backdrop of stiff opposition to the implementation of bio-metric finger scan readers by the employees.

Leader of Goa Municipal Employees Association, Anil Shirodkar, however, said that there’s no issue over the action initiated by the civic body.

He, however, maintained that the Municipal employees would strictly follow the duty timings in future.
