MARGAO, MAY 18
The Margao Municipal Council on Monday cracked a whip against shops in the New Market selling plastic sheets on the pavements.
A MMC team led by market inspector Anil Shirodkar made their presence felt in the New Market and warned the traders to stop selling the goods on the building passage.
Minutes later, however, the Civic workers reigned in on the traders by confiscating goods displayed on the passages, indicating they meant business.
When contacted, Market inspector Anil Shirodkar informed they had served a 24-hour deadline on the traders to stop selling the plastic sheets on the passages, but later immediately cracked a whip since the traders were warned earlier to stop the practice.
Admitting that plastic sheets were being sold in the passages of New Market on the eve of monsoons, he said that raid was conducted since the activity not just blocked the passages but also obstructed smooth flow of traffic.
