MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Saturday cracked the whip on hawkers in the wholesale fish market by seizing their goods for conducting sale by the roadside.
Besides, the Margao Traffic Cell imposed fines on the owners of nearly 20 to 30 fish transporting vehicles parked along the roadside which were later cleared to ensure the smooth traffic movement.

On Saturday, MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira and the municipal officials were supported by the Traffic Cell team led by PI Gautam Salonki.
Incidentally, this is the second visit of the chairperson to the market after taking charge of the MMC. Last month, he had warned the hawkers and the owners of vehicles. However, illegal sale of fish and parking by fish transporting vehicles by the roadside continued.
It is pertinent to note that there have been several complaints of hawking and vehicles creating mess near the wholesale fish market.
The residents have been demanding strict action against such illegalities.
The MMC chairperson said the civic body had warned the hawkers of action for conducting illegal sale. However, despite the warning they continued with their illegal business along the roadside.
“We will not tolerate such illegal activities in Margao municipal jurisdiction. MMC has requested the Traffic Cell and RTO to take stern action against the fish transporting vehicles parked along the roadside for the whole day”, he stated.
The residents have requested the MMC to clear all the fish storage trucks parked along stretch from Radhakrishna Hotel to Wholesale Fish Market.
